Seek Schumann Fantasy Op. 17 3rd Movement
By Dean Howe

Dear MMD, Can anybody tell me about the Schumann "Fantasia, Op. 17
in C major", 3rd movement, on Ampico or Welte Licensee? I recently
got all three movements on English Duo-Art. I have movements 1 and
2 on Ampico, played by Ossip Gabrilowitsch, and part of the second
movement on Welte Licensee played by Teresa Carreño.

I have all three issued complete reprints of all issued numbers.
Neither one, Ampico or Welte Licensee, says movement 3 was issued.

It does exist on Red Welte but I have never seen it. (It can be had
in Germany but it's expensive.) Movement 3 of the Fantasy is a long
roll and I believe quite beautiful and listenable on English Duo-Art.
In fact, I like it best of the three movements played by Goodson.

It seems it never was issued on Licensee and it exists in Tri-Phonola
played by Gabrilowitsch, but never seems issued on Ampico. Since
I like it a lot I'd like to copy the Ampico roll or copy on Licensee.

I'd also like to know why it was never issued as really likeable?
We could have an 11-1/4" roll read and re-issued if we could find one.
It certainly seems worth it.

[ The only recording for Welte is the Carreño performance which was
[ demonstrated in 1904 on the Welte "Artist" reproducing system that
[ preceded the "Mignon". The Forzando rate of the earlier system is
[ quite a bit different from the Welte-Mignon Forzando and the 3rd
[ movement of the Fantasy doesn't sound good when played on a Welte
[ Mignon -- much editing of the expression would be needed to improve
[ it. I believe that's the main reason why it wasn't issued in
[ Licensee format. See my article about Ken Caswell's efforts, at

[ Jim Heyworth reported that the Ampico roll set was recut by Harold
 [ Powell in the 1970s. -- Robbie
