Just to let you all know that my problem with connecting a laptop 
to a UM0 board has been solved -- the problem was all in the cable.  
It was only when I finally bought a Roland UM-1G USB to MIDI cable 
that it all worked, so it seems that not all USB to MIDI cables 
are alike.  Thank you to everyone who offered help.
