Player Piano Company Sign
By Matthew Caulfield

Apropos (maybe?) of the disagreement between Rob Goodale and Joyce
Brite about the disposition of the Player Piano Company sign at 704
East Douglas Street (see 100818 and 100819 MMD), I would point to the
fate of the equally historic sign for the B&B Carousell on Surf Avenue
in Brooklyn's Coney Island.

After the death of its long-time operator, Mike Saltzstein, the place
was closed and the carousel and its Bruder band organ were eventually
sold to the City of New York for relocation elsewhere. Nobody gave
much thought to the sign that graced the front of the building and that
was a Coney Island landmark for decades, with its unique spelling of
"Carousell." The sign is still there, but it has been painted over.
