High Tech Parts Replication
By Steve Cobb

This is a really fascinating video showing how almost any part can be
duplicated with computer technology. I'm sure there are huge implications
for mechanical music restoration, and personally I can't wait!

Attachment thumbnail A 3-dimension part, even with moving internal pieces, is scanned in three dimensions and then manufactured out of plastic with very little (or no) manual intervention. Then the plastic piece can be used to make molds, patterns, etc., to use, for example in a CNC machine. It cuts out a lot of expensive skilled labor in the middle. In the video they demonstrate making car parts, but we all know there are many castings, bezels, frames, and such that we could make for old pianos that would really be a boon to the rebuilder. Take a look and see what you think! Steve Cobb stevecob@gmail.com.geentroep [delete ".geentroep" to reply]
