Mechanical Music for the Youth
By Jay Merrill

I attended barber school at the age of 52 and was one of the oldest
students. Most of the students could have been my children or younger.
We moved into a newer building with a built-in sound system. It had
been a restaurant and was quite classy.

The owners were about my age and one day they played some tapes or CDs
of a lot of 1940's big bands and Sinatra. I was amazed at the 20-somes
liking the music! We had customers of all ages and they liked the music
too. The owners recently opened a school in downtown Chicago and are
looking for a Crown player piano as the building was the Crown factory.

When I play my Ampico for someone that has never heard a reproducer,
let alone a player (the Ampico roll drawer really gets them), I play
"Malagueña" or "Who", two of my favorites.
