In regard to the question of using Velcro for music rolls,
a large fabric store will have several colors of Velcro, maybe
even in different widths.  Has anyone ever tried silk ribbon,
or even a cotton muslin sleeve with Velcro along the edge
for closure?

This would be archival storage of the paper, as contact with
the acids in cardboard may eventually degrade it.

There are lots of interesting ideas in a good fabric store.
