Assessing Fire and Smoke Damage
By Dan Armstrong

Hi all, I've restored pianos after fires several times in the last
ten years. That said, all of them were closed up (as David said this
one was) and none of the internal parts were damaged. The major damage
was to the finish -- not from water, but from smoke and particulate
matter. Every one of them had some degree of damage there that
patchwork touch-up wouldn't fix, so the whole piano was refinished;
I've had no complaints from those owners.

As a tuner/technician, I'd write a summary of my findings to give to
the church board and the church's insurance company, along with
estimated cost of restoration to the level of quality it was before
the fire.
