Care of Mermod Freres Musical Box
By Craig Smith

Hi Alex, Nancy Fratti gives you good advice. And a little oil would
be a good idea, but where to put the oil? Do _not_ put it on the gear
teeth. Also, the green on the cylinder is probably from excess oil,
which will eventually cause a stain. Give me a call and I'll be happy
to point out where the oil goes and answer any other questions.

The rust on the comb is a bad thing, as Nancy says. One thing you
should _not_ do is put "Naval Jelly" or another rust remover on it.
They are actually acids and they will cause more damage then good.

If you decide not to have the box restored, you can use a soft (brass)
wire brush to remove any loose rust. Be careful of the tips. The fine
wire dampers _under_ the tips are easy to bend or break.

Enjoy your new musical box.
