Hello,  Whilst Mark Ritzenhein is correct, technically speaking,
I respectfully disagree in that we can predict or reproduce the effect
I described.  As mentioned in my original post, I have seen and played
thousands of out-of-tune pianos in our shop.  Most of them sounded
rather terrible.  Even many that were very nearly in tune, sounded
out-of-tune.  Only once in a while, a piano came along, that had that
special "magic" sound I mentioned earlier.

The "magic" was always gone after tuning and it was never reproducible
by detuning unisons, etc.  After reading all the responces, I am now
favouring the theory that it has something to do with the temperament
of the slow detuning that occurs in some particular pianos under
certain conditions.  Unfortunately I have never been in a position where
I could personally experiment with different tuning temperaments to see
the effect on a particular piano.
