Early QRS 88-note Classical Piano Rolls
By John Phillips

Hello MMD. I received an unexpected and welcome windfall from an
ex-colleague of mine a week ago -- about fifty classical 88-note
rolls. Among them are two early QRS classical rolls, unlike any
that I have encountered in Australia.

The box labels are printed in black on cream-colored paper, with
the exception of the words "88 NOTE", which are printed in red. The
tags on the roll leaders are the most elegant I have ever seen on
a QRS roll. The fabric is a milk chocolate brown, with the letters
QRS punched out in maybe an Art Deco style. The spool ends are of
black-painted turned wood.

The rolls are No. 11166, Fantasie Op. 35 (Arrangement for Harp) by
E. Parish Jones, and No. 60134, Am Stillen Herd (Transcription of
Song from "Wagner's "Meistersinger"), by Franz Liszt. The latter is
in almost 'as new' condition. (That may be because it's a piece of
Wagner music.)

Neither roll has a sustain track. Both seem well arranged.

Does anyone know anything about this series of rolls?

John Phillips in Hobart, Tasmania.
