I don't believe anyone has mentioned the 'friction device' on the roll
end; to my knowledge most, if not all, 'players' have this device and
in most cases the friction is adjustable and on "rewind" the friction
is "off".  If the friction is adjusted or is too much it will change
the 'Tempo' setting.  This can be checked by marking the paper at 8
feet and time this distance when playing at Tempo 80 in _one_ minute.

The friction wheel should be checked for oil that might have found its
way into the system and/or the leather which butts against the wheel
might need replacing.

One point to make is to tighten the roll before it is played.  If the
problem persists, maybe it is just one roll or rolls common to one roll
supplier in way of the paper has deteriorated and is "crinkly", not a
pure flat surface, which will cause the paper on the take-up spool to
have air-gaps.

Having the long-play roll in a tightened state in its box should keep
the paper in a better condition.
