65-note Music Mounted on 88-note Spool
By Terry Smythe

Over the past 10+ years that I have been scanning music rolls, a number
of these rolls passed through my hands. My suspicion is that some
'leventy-seven years ago, early 65-note rolls passed into the hands
of owners of 88-note pianos. The pin-end spools cannot be mounted.

I suspect that owners sometimes did not take note of the hole spacing
and simply re-spooled such rolls onto empty 88-note spools. Surprise!
Surprise! They still didn't work, and were simply set aside,
eventually ending up in various collections as orphans.

For such rolls, when encountered, I simply re-spooled them back onto
empty 65n spools, so I could scan them. As I already had a roll repair
rig in hand, it was a simple matter to re-spool.
