Hallo Dale,  what you intend to do is possible, but I experienced some
shortcomings.  First you need a MIDI-to-USB converter (cable).  I use
one from LogiLink, UA 0037.  Then you have to generate a USB port on
your iPad.  These are made by Apple; compatible ones are available, too.

Then you need a program, called an "app" in the iPad world.  I use the
Symphonix Evolution player.  A more sophisticated editor version is
available, which costs more.  The player is capable of playing MIDI
either via the internal sound facility or sending it to the external
MIDI device.

Now the difficulties start, at least I had some of them.  In the
beginning I saw no other way than sending an e-mail to the iPad with
an attached MIDI file.  This worked, but I had to stop the Symphonix
player from quantizing the notes.  Building a library this way is very
laborious!

The dedicated media organizer for the i-world, iTunes, is not a good
companion to MIDI songs.  Due to these obstacles I do not use the iPad
very often.  I still prefer a Yamaha MDF MIDI Filer with good old
floppies.
