Rebuilding a Pratt-Read Player Piano Action
By Clinton Gray

I've recently introduced a few new titles to my Duo-Art recut list,
including two sets of hard-to-find but musically superb pieces, the
Liszt Sonata played by Ernest Schelling and Gershwin's American in
Paris 'played by' Milne & Leith. Actually, 'introduced' rather
underplays the work needed here... the Liszt comes from original
rolls in Canada, the Netherlands and the UK, and one of the American
in Paris rolls is actually patched together from two different rolls
as intact originals are so hard to find!

American in Paris is an extraordinary tour-de-force of roll arranging
by Frank Milne, with strict-tempo sections linked by hand-crafted
linking passages where Milne worked his way through all sorts of
punches-per-beat patterns, all worked out on his kitchen table if the
stories are to be believed. The recuts have been carefully checked
(and edited when necessary) to ensure the beat's accurately recut.

Have a look at my web site for full details: http://www.pianorolls.co.uk/

I'm also considering issuing a complete set of the Chopin Preludes as
played by Ferrucio Busoni, performances which have always attracted
great interest. These were issued only in the London 'O' series in a
rather chaotic manner, spread over 13 rolls ranging from 8 to 62 feet
in length.

Some of the rolls, especially the really short ones, are distinctly
rare. Given this, rather than just issuing them in the original roll
form, I've worked out that it's possible to cut them as four rolls with
all the preludes done in numerical order, the length varying between
80 and 100 feet. I'd imagine that overall this is a better approach,
although as these would be perforation-accurate recuts some tempo
correction would be required during play to compensate for acceleration
effects.

The whole set would cost 60 GB pounds plus postage. I'll do these if
there's enough interest, so if you want to put your name down for a set
please let me know!
