"Mr. Christmas" Converted to 30-note Movement
By Nick Vasallo

Instead of buying the expensive but lovely 33-note chromatic music
box by Harada, I chose to buy the semi-chromatic 30-note box that was
recently released.

I bought my mine from Grand Illusions and it is the same as offered by
other retailers as well. I ended up planning to build an automatic box
that ran on a DC motor. I was about to order parts when I discovered
the "Mr. Christmas" music box, thanks to Roland Tremblay. This box
used the 24-note diatonic scale from Sankyo:

Upon receiving it I gutted it and discovered there was not going to be
a nice neat exchange of movements (since both movements are the same
dimensions). The size of the gears were different as well as the
length from the crank gear (to the middle gear) and the DC motor gear
(to the middle gear).

I ended up drilling holes into the 24-note metal removable side frame
to accommodate the larger diameter of the 30-note rollers. It plays
fine but I needed to McGuyver a way to apply pressure upon the middle
gear to the interior gears with a small bent metal clip. I think if
I was able to shrink the hole of the interior gear this would run a lot
smoother. Still, it works though! Here is a video clip:
