Passing of Denis Condon
By Glenn Amer

It's my sad duty to report that Denis Condon passed away last night
after a long illness.

Denis was a pivotal figure in the collection and promotion of
reproducing piano rolls in Australia. So many collectors enjoyed
musical evenings at his house, "Ampico Towers," in Newtown in Sydney.

Who could ever forget the performances with the various symphony
orchestras, in Australia and New Zealand, of Percy Grainger playing
the Grieg and Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos with the Duo-Art Vorsetzer
that Denis and Peter Phillips built? Sometimes Denis conducted,
sometimes John Hopkins.

On a personal note, Denis was the very first adjudicator I encountered
when I entered my first competition as a young child. His
encouragement to so many competitors meant a lot and he encouraged
many a performer.

We were all honoured to have known him.

Regards, Glenn Amer
