Salzburg Stier Restoration 10 Year Anniversary
By Ron Schmuck

Hello everyone, It is now ten years since the restoration
of the Salzburg Stier barrel organ was completed. As you know,
this historic instrument is housed in the fortress Hohensalzburg,
Salzburg, Austria.

I have created a special place on our web page to gather all the
different information concerning the Stier, before and after the
restoration. Please take a moment to visit the site (which is
always under construction, it seems :-) and, if you have something
to contribute to the Stier's site I would greatly appreciate
receiving it and posting onto the "Salzburg Stier site."

Many thanks to everyone, especially the folks who contributed
financially to the project some 10+ years ago.

Sincerely,

[ The ancient organ consists of the "Hornwerk", which loudly plays
[ a three-note chord, plus a barrel organ that plays songs. A concise
[ description of "das Hornwerk" is given at
 [ http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornwerk_%28Instrument%29
 [ (my translation):
 [
[ "The horn-work is a mechanical organ instrument. In its original
[ form, upon actuation of the bellows it produced a greatly reinforced
[ triad from only a wind chest, bellows and pipes.
 [
[ "In the Middle Ages such instruments were installed in special horn
[ towers within the fortifications of cities and monasteries. They
[ filled a function similar to a siren by, for example, acoustically
[ signaling to the population the beginning and end of the workday."
 [
 [ At http://www.nickelodeonco.com/ord-hume-stier-roar.html historian
[ Arthur W.J.G. Ord-Hume tells a lively story about the Salzburg Stier
[ (bull) and how it was built to remind the townspeople of the power
[ of the Catholic church's Papal Bull (bulla).
