FS: Restored 1920 Steinway XR in No. Virginia
By Ralph Nielsen

For sale is a fully restored plain-case mahogany Steinway Model XR
6'2" Duo-Art grand piano, located in northern Virginia just outside
Washington D.C. Price, shipping, etc. is negotiable, but asking in
the ballpark just under $20K. Final aspects of the restoration were
just completed in the last month. Clips of the piano played both by
the Duo-Art player and by hand can be seen and heard on YouTube at

I suspect some may find the videos interesting as examples of
"mechanical music on YouTube" or as fodder for the perennial
"Duo-Art vs. Ampico" discussion, even if they aren't in the market
for a reproducing piano.

The instrument has a 1920 Steinway serial number, and the full 88-note
early style stack typical of that period, but it has a number of
details usually associated with post-1926 instruments, including
manual Theme & Accompaniment volume levers rather than the "Temponamic"
knob, and pneumatic una-corda action shift rather than just the
"hammer rail lift" pedal control. Everything looks factory original,
so its exact history is a little uncertain.
