Mechanical Music on Public Broadcasting
By Lee Rothrock

Through happenstance, I became aware of a three-part program,
"Broadway..." that is being shown in repeat this weekend on my local
PBS affiliate. I tuned in to the first part when it was almost
finished the other evening. Checking the local PBS schedule, I saw
that it was three one-hour programs, shown consecutively.

By the time the second segment began, I was ready to put it on disc as
it was broadcast, with plans to put another disc on for the third part.
Part 2 had a segment about George Gershwin and player piano. My plan
to record the third part was washed out by my falling asleep.

Anyway, it's scheduled to be re-broadcast in the wee hours Sunday
morning locally, and I'm sure everyone within reach of a PBS station
will find it somewhere in his local schedule. It's not just a treat
mechanical-music-wise. If you find details about musicians' careers to
be of interest, it is fascinating! Check it out!
