Lubricating Electric Motors
By Bill Chapman

The discussions brought about by Bob Taylor, John Tuttle and others
showed best what MMDigest can do: to bring out various opinions that
are necessary for re-builders to know. Besides, it is just plain
interesting to non-engineers to learn the history of mains voltage
designations over the years.

What I hope to hear more of is readers experiences with motor
lubrication and how much or how often the oil cups need total cleaning.
So far I don't recall seeing discussions of which oil to use, and which
ones to stay away from.

I have written comments to eBay sellers of old instruments cautioning
them not to run the motors until lubricated. Ruined bearings may make
the difference between a restoration or a dump. Often I get a thank
you message back.
