Cecilian 13-1/4" Music Rolls by Farrand
By Nicholas Simons

John Tuttle asks about Cecilian rolls. These are an early design
of piano roll made, as he says, by the Farrand Co, and designed
to play on their own design of piano player.

The roll is wider than the standard 65-note roll of the time and
includes the unusual wider tracks towards the top and bottom end
of the scale. I believe that no other manufacturer adopted the
Cecilian tracker design so this put Cecilian owners at a disadvantage
when buying rolls as they would have had only a single source.

I have seen a few Cecilian rolls over the years but never a piano
player that plays these early rolls. My very first 65-note player
piano was made by Cecilian but used the standard 65-note roll so
obviously the wider roll was discontinued very early on.
