Applying Graphite to Wood Surfaces
By Pete Knobloch

Hi Larry, If you use 99% alcohol like Spencer talks about it won't
work very well; it takes some water to open up the pores of the wood
so the graphite won't just rub off after one day of playing the player
piano.

Use 70% isopropyl alcohol which does contain some water. Take an old
felt piano hammer and dip it in the alcohol and rub the section of the
wood to be graphited. Before it dries completely, add the dry powder
to the wood and use the same damp hammer to rub it into the wood.

For this to work properly you should have sanded the sliding surfaces
completely flat using sand paper on glass. I start with 80 grit then
go to 220, then 400 grit sand paper for the final smooth surface. This
sanding is important to get the sliders to completely seal on the air
motor.
