Oiling the Roll Playing Mechanism
By Bill Chapman

Here is a label found in an early Aeolian player; the exact
wording:

    IMPORTANT

To insure the proper working and running gear, all
metal working bearings should be oiled every week or two,
depending upon what the amount of use the instrument is
put to. A good sperm oil should be used for this purpose.

Care should be taken that no oil or grease is used on the
motor slide valves. It will be necessary, however, to oil
the small wooden brake shoe resting on the friction wheel,
otherwise this shoe is likely to become gummed up and exert
an undue drag on the wheel, which will naturally retard the
  speed of the motor.
