Needle Valves in Early Ampico Grand

I just saw small brass needle valves to the left of the spoolbox
in a 1920 Chickering Ampico grand.  I presume that they are for
micro-adjusting the bass and treble expression somehow, but would
appreciate more info on these, and a tubing chart for such
a drawer if possible.
