Music Rolls About Flying Machines
By John Phillips

Hello MMD. In response to Charles Davis' query, I dug out my only
aeroplane related roll and gave it a spin. It's an Aeolian Themodist
Metrostyle 65-note roll, No. 100692, and is called "The Flight of the
Aeroplane, Polka Volante", Op. 7, composed by Voteller, and copyrighted
in 1911. It's quite a pleasant roll, but it doesn't summon impressions
of flight; rather, it could equally be called "A Sunday Afternoon Buggy
Ride". It is not mentioned in the 1914 Aeolian Catalog.

I have a fading memory of having mentioned this in MMD a few years ago,
and that someone else wrote in to say that Mr. Voteller was a relative
of someone influential in the Aeolian Co., which might explain why this
and a couple of his other compositions appeared briefly in the Aeolian
listings. I certainly enjoyed renewing my acquaintance with this roll.
