I'd like to thank Rowland Lee for his informative and well written
screed on this subject!  But I'd also like to point out that while
much that is on YouTube is distressing (to me, and likely others on
this list - tapping the "Most Popular" link brings me to despair) it
is also a wonderful way for new generations to unwittingly stumble
across the efforts of their forbears, and compare their merits with
whatever it is they've been hearing (which bodes well for our
forbears, and their heirs, and society in general, in my opinion).

So as long as YouTube is amply paying royalties to those who deserve
recompense, whilst not harassing those of we who innocently want to
share the joys of the music we love with others, free of the motive
of material profit, great!
