I've had good success in matching a wide variety of finishes using
Trans-Tint dyes, available widely from woodworking stores, e.g.

It requires some fussing; you really need to make a range of
combinations and then finish your test strip as you intend to
finish the piece to ensure the final color is right.

The dyes are nice because you can use them in water, alcohol or
finishes to either stain or apply as a colored finish.  I've had
a fair amount of success by tinting a 1- to 2-pound cut shellac initial
coat to the right color then top-coating with a harder clear finish
like polyurethane or a blonde or amber shellac, depending on the piece.
