Jazz Classics Roll "Lovin' Sam"
By Douglas Heckrotte

I was tickled to "Buy-It-Now" on eBay a copy of Jazz Classics' recut of
"Lovin' Sam" played by Zez Confrey. It plays well but the paper seems
a smidge wide. The JC label did not display the Ampico number; so I
went into my Obenchain catalog and found that she did not list the
title under Confrey. In adding the roll to my inventory, I was
surprised to see that my Excel database remembered the title, meaning
that I already had a copy. I do, but Adam Carroll played it, #203101-E,
issued December 1923.

I laid the two rolls side by side, and they are essentially identical,
punching for punching. The JC roll is less cleanly cut at the chain
portions of a note and is a smidge longer. Ahh, well!

Interestingly, a Google search reveals only the Welte recording 6407,
issued April 1923, played by Charles Rosoff.
