Unknown Ragtime Tunes on Swiss Musical Movement
By Andrew Barrett

Hello Mr. Ryder and group, Catching up on the latest MMD post while
preparing for the West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento this
weekend, Andy Park's posting reminded me of Mr. Ryder's posting of
these unknown tunes earlier this year.

Just listening to the MP3 of the second tune at
  http://www.mmdigest.com/Gallery/Sounds/ryder_Mermod2.mp3
I immediately recognized this tune as the well-known "Bowery Buck" by
the famous ragtime composer Mr. Tom Turpin. This tune was published in
1899 by Robert DeYong [not "DeYoung" as some folks incorrectly spell]
& Co. in St. Louis, and was a rather successful instrumental in the very
early 1900s.

And for musical box fans, here's a version of this played on a Criterion
20-5/8" disc musical box. Now, who did this arrangement?

You can read more about Mr. Tom Turpin here on Perfessor Bill Edwards'
site. He was truly one of the most influential ragtime composers:

Cheers,
Andrew E. Barrett
