Lubricating Wood Bearings
By Jim Crank

It may be that the wooden bearing material Welte used is called lignum
vitae. It was once a very common water-lubricated bearing material for
the stern propeller bearing on antique power launches. An old shipyard
here advised boiling it in pig fat before installing a new one. It is
still used; for a source try lignum-vitae-bearings.com/
