String Scales in Mason & Hamlin Ampico Pianos
By Stephen Powell

I agree with Jon Page regarding the bass strings on a Mason & Hamlin
Ampico. I've examined and modified hundreds of scales and manufactured
thousands of bass strings. I've yet to come across a scale that
I didn't think could be improved given the knowledge that now exists
concerning piano string scaling; sometimes the improvements can be
substantial.

Interestingly, some of the worst scales come from the most famous piano
manufacturers! Knowing what I know, there is no way I would blindly
duplicate a set of bass strings because "that was what the manufacturer
intended." How often have we lamented other aspects of original piano
design?!
