Preserving the Music of Music Rolls
By Lee Rothrock

John Del Carlo asks, "How much time do we have left for our original
rolls?" I'm a little mystified. Are his rolls being damaged by being
played? If so I'm wondering if there's something wrong with his piano.

The only things I know of which can damage piano rolls when they are
played are (1) the type of piano where tracking is accomplished by
fingers which touch the edge of the paper for control feedback to
the tracking mechanism instead of holes in the tracker bar, and (2)
misbehaving tracker mechanism during either play or rewind. I have
rolls which I have played ten times a day for weeks without observing
any damage. What's going on, John?
