Henry Burkard, Welte-Mignon Piano Roll Artist
By Gerhard Dangel

Heinrich Burkard (who called himself Henry Burkard by 1914, at
the latest) recorded at least 132 piano rolls for Welte-Mignon.
The rolls numbered from 2195 to 2605 were recorded in Freiburg;
a few rolls are dated, like 2195 with June 06, 1910, or the 2322
with January 5, 1911. Surely the rolls numbered from 3564 to 3785
were recorded in Poughkeepsie, New York.

He was born in Heidelberg, November 25, 1881, and served in the
Imperial Army as a musician (trumpeter) from 1901 to 1908, mostly
in the Freiburg garrison, and after leaving military service he was
employed by M. Welte & Soehne as a musician.

Burkard travelled to the USA in 1912 and arrived in New York on
October 10 or 8, 1912, with his wife Josefine and his daughter
Lieselotte. His son, Henry, was born in Poughkeepsie on Sept. 14,
1914, sharing the birthday with me! Burkard was director of the
'Germania' society in Poughkeepsie at least up to 1919. He also
played the organ in the 'German Evangelican Lutheran Church' in
Poughkeepsie. In 1917 he applied for the US-citizenship.

Kind regards from the hometown of Welte,
