Piano Rolls by Ferde Grofe
By Fred Scoles

Mr. Tom Binnall asked in 140531 MMDigest about the popularity of
Ferde Grofe player rolls. From what I've learned with our player
rebuilding and piano tuning & servicing work here in Upstate New York,
some of our player customers highly prize and enjoy their Grofe Ampico
rolls.

Approximately 20 years ago I had the honor of tuning and regulating a
small vertical "straight" 1940's piano for an older, very interesting
lady, Elizabeth "Libby" Munson. She was quite active as a pianist in
local churches in Fulton, and she used to play for me a number of her
special show tune arrangements which were almost identical to Mr.
Grofe's Ampico roll arrangements.

She explained to me that she was one of several "student arrangers"
who Mr. Grofe had hired to arrange pieces for his shows and his roll
recording sessions. The names of these arrangers normally didn't
appear on the roll credit labels.
