Valve Travel in Duo-Art Expression Valves
By John Phillips

Hello, MMD. I'm aware that I may be trying the patience of some
readers, but Tasmania is not a hub of player restoring activity,
and I suspect that no-one else here could answer this question.

I have begun to investigate the valve chest whose contents control
the movement of the accordion pneumatics. I numbered the valves
1 to 8; not very enterprising but I can find many other opportunities
to confuse myself.

First I measured the valve travel as it presently is: here are the
results:

Valve Valve Accordion
 Nr. Travel Travel
      (inches)(inches)

  1 0.044 0.0625
  2 0.044 0.125
  3 0.044 0.250
  4 0.046 0.500
  5 0.044 0.500
  6 0.041 0.250
  7 0.040 0.125
  8 0.042 0.0625

Valves 4 and 5 have inlet brass nipples that are 0.315" O.D.; these two
valves control the two half-inch accordions. All the other valves have
inlet tubes of 0.225" O.D. When I got to valve 4 I assumed that the
extra valve travel and nipple diameter was to accommodate the extra air
flow from the larger accordion. But the results from valves 5 to 8
don't really support that idea.

Does this matter, or am I worrying about nothing?
