Repairing a Cast Iron Piano Frame
By Thomas Binnall

[ Ref. 140716 MMD, Cracked Piano Frame in Seeburg Nickelodeon ]

The best way to fix a casting is to weld it. Seek out someone in
your area who specializes in fixing auto engine heads that are cracked.
I recommend the person doing the work has an oven to heat the casting
to about 500 degrees F., and then weld only a short section, letting
the area cool back to about 500 degrees, before proceeding again.

Once the weld work is accomplished, keep the casting at 500 degrees
for 24 hours to relieve stress, then let it cool in the oven, slowly
lowering the temperature over a 24-hour period. This will ruin any
finish on it, but if it saves an irreplaceable casting, well...
