Market for Mechanical Musical Instruments
By Nancy Fratti

I couldn't help but smile when I read Alison Biden's suggestion
[140804 MMDigest]. My husband is a geek and when we started dating
he wasn't 'moved' by my profession at all. He was into heavy metal
(from which is now wearing hearing aids!).

One day I took a musical movement out of its case and told him
I had something interesting to show him. He came over and I said,
"Behold, one of the first computers!" He thought about it and then
said, "Yes, it is probably the first canned music."

He sat and I explained to him how it worked (he could figure out
most of it) and how I repaired them. While he's not 'hooked' on our
mechanical devices, he does appreciate them more now that he's made
the 'computer' connection!

I'd love to see someone make a model -- an exploded view of a musical
box -- and bring it, along with a functional machine, to libraries,
etc., to show people how they work. Heck -- hit the masses and put it
on YouTube!

With fewer people coming to shows, it seems the Internet is the main
media to get out our message.
