Hard-to-read Music Box Tune Card
By Matthew Caulfield

My thanks to Juan Alonso for his help as a native Spanish speaker
in identifying some of the tunes on the tune card that Darren Wallace
sent in [140826 MMD]. His conclusions strengthen my suspicion that
the lady (they were usually ladies who did the calligraphy) who
inscribed the tune card was not a Spanish speaker. Not only did she
misspell "ciudandana," but she misplaced the dot over the i, making
it "cuidandana," even further removed from the proper "ciudadano."

The ladies who inscribed music box tune sheets were probably hired
for their handwriting and not for their linguistic or musical ability.
So it is not uncommon to find such errors on tune sheets, which errors
are easily recognized if the tunes are not obscure, as are the tunes
on Darren Wallace's box.
