Seek Functional Pianola in Frankfurt
By Axel Klein

Hello. I am a Franfurt, Germany, based musicologist specialising in
Irish musical history (see http://www.axelklein.de ). I recently published
a book about the O'Kelly family of Irish musicians in 19th- and early
20th-century France. One of them was the composer and pianist Henri
O'Kelly (1859-1938) who recorded more than 50 Pleyela rolls in Paris
between about 1907 and 1923.

I recently bought one of O'Kelly's Pleyela rolls on eBay. The only
working pianola in my neighbourhood -- in fact the only working model
in the German Federal State of Hesse -- is a Ducartist model (by
Philips) at Frankfurt university.

I am so curious to hear the Pleyela roll. Can you tell me whether
Pleyela and Ducartist are compatible? Both are 88-note systems,
28.7 cm wide [11.25 inch nominal], but I don't want to destroy my
precious roll. Thanks for letting me know.
