Old Rolls Tearing On Rewind
By David Dewey

I was at a friend's house yesterday tuning his restored Chickering
Mediterranean Mission style grand with Ampico (model A). We played
a very nice original roll, but on rewind it proceeded to shred the
right edge -- the edge would just tear and fold over at times. I
finally manually rerolled it to prevent further damage.

I'm on dial-up Internet connection so forgive me that I didn't check
the database for previous postings on this. Any ideas what needs to
be adjusted to stop and prevent this (the tearing, not the dial-up!)?
My modern 88-note test roll had no problem, so maybe it's the paper's
age?

Also, neither of us has figured out how to take off the drawer covers,
so we need help on that one. We both know that when the secret is
found we will go, "Duh -- why didn't we see that?" We need to adjust
the Tempo, as right now Tempo 65 is actually playing at Tempo 80.

Thanks!
David Dewey
