Schubert Military March at Tempo 180
By John Phillips

Schubert's Military High Speed Dash

Hello MMD, This is a trivial one. About a week ago I received
a parcel of rolls from Frances Broadway's Post Bid roll auction.
One was a Meloto roll, No. 55048, of Schubert's Military March,
Op. 51 No. 1., arranged by Tausig. Subsequently I discovered that
I already had the hand-played version, A547, Full Scale Themodist
version, played by Ethel Leginska, as well as Duo-Art 6487-6,
played by Bauer and Gabrilowitsch.

The Meloto roll starts off and ends at speed 80, but in the middle
is a section that is clearly marked to be played at speed 180. That
will be difficult, as none of my players have Tempo scales that extend
beyond speed 150!  It's clearly a mistake by the U.K. Aeolian Company;
it goes to show that none of us is perfect.

I'll pass the Meloto roll on to my grandsons, who will enjoy thumping
it out -- at speed 80.
