Filmusic Roll Artist Chauncey Haines
By Cecil Dover

My first job after art school was working for Barker Brothers,
a mega furniture store in downtown Los Angeles. The store had
a grand, 3-story entrance lobby complete with a pipe organ.

Presiding over the daily noon time concerts was non other than
organist Chauncey Haines. I always went down to the lobby to listen
to the organ but, to my undeveloped ear, listening to Mr. Haines
was pure torture -- his playing style reminded me of chickens
clucking around their pen pecking at pebbles.

Dear old Chauncey also played an electronic organ for the first years
of the traditional all-day Christmas Eve television program broadcast
from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Los Angeles Music Center.

I never knew that he had recorded piano rolls or I probably would
have pestered him to death.
