Janssen "Modeska" Player Piano
By Don Teach

I was aware of the Janssen "Modeska" (from an old picture I think was
in the Pierce Piano Atlas) when I was a kid and attended NAMM shows
in Chicago. I have great memories of meeting and seeing all kinds of
pianos. I saw my first Steinway Duo-Art grand in the QRS room with
Ramsey Tick, a Seeburg console player piano, and of course old timers
with memories of the player days. A man with Janssen told me that only
twelve "Modeska" pianos were made. We have one that is a Recordo.

I first met Larry Givens at one of those shows selling his MelODee
brand of piano rolls. One of the Aeolian men told me that A. B. Chase
Company actually made some of the nine-foot Knabe grand pianos as
demand was so great in the nineteen-twenties. At one time apparently
the piano business was very good and exciting.
