Running Cakewalk Pro Audio Under Windows 10
By Glenn Thomas

In Digest 151212, Max Huff asked about running Cakewalk Pro Audio 8
under Windows 10.

I'm running Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, very similar to version 8, under
Windows 10. My initial problem with the program failing to load was
the same as Max describes. The problem is this version is about ten
years old and not designed for the newer versions of Windows. Further,
the later versions of Cakewalk, now with the "Sonar" banner, are not
nearly as good as the older versions. I use Cakewalk Pro Audio all
the time in Windows 7, 8, and 10 and wouldn't be without it.

To open programs like this, and some other legacy programs that will
install but not open correctly in newer operating systems like Windows
10, right click the program name in your applications (usually the .exe
file in Windows Explorer). Choose the "Troubleshoot Compatibility"
option. Follow the prompts and go through the various options that
Windows offers to emulate older versions of Windows where the program
opened and operated correctly.

I have successfully used this method under Windows 8 and 10 to open
several legacy programs, including Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. The other
fallback, which I have also used occasionally, is to always keep an old
computer with a Windows operating system at least two full versions
old! Hope this helps.
