Speed Control for Electric Suction Box
By Luke Myers

I am wondering whether I can use a 5 ampere, 120 V.A.C. variable
speed fan control switch on a 6 ampere 120 V.A.C. vacuum motor for an
electric suction source on my player piano? Is this prohibitively
dangerous ("Stop - Danger of Electrocution!") or more of a "take
caution" procedure?

I'm not wanting to see the house go up in flames or anything like that.
What are your thoughts on this? Should I do it or not?

[ Sure, do it, Luke, but exercise caution because sooner or later
[ electrical failure is likely. Completely enclose the speed control
[ device in a fire resistant metal box, and use a 3-wire grounding
[ cord to connect both the box and the motor frame to the green wire
[ ground. Instead of the ordinary 3-prong plug, install a compact GFI
[ (ground fault interrupter) plug at the end of the power cord. Read
