Dispersing a Mechanical Music Collection
By Bernt Damm

At the NAWCC we have the same problem but with clock and watch
collections, several museums and stakeholders. The conclusion is
that it is a really bad idea to will a collection to a museum. It
encumbers museums with usually limited funding into managing, caring,
storing, transporting, etc., a whole lot of stuff they do not want
nor can afford.

Instead, have the will state that the collection must be auctioned
off and the proceeds then given to the museum of choice. Then use the
funds to preserve or purchase instruments needed for their displays.

Much as we love our stuff, we should not burden others with it after
we die, well intended as it may be.
