Unknown Composition on Welte Licensee Roll
By Hans-W. Schmitz

Peter Phillips mentioned in his posting the Welte roll 2905 with the
opera "Mireille". The Welte T-100 roll was released for the first
time in the British Welte catalogue of Oct. 1913 (see the German
catalog by Dangel/Schmitz). The composer is indeed Gounod and the
artist, B. Goodall, apparently is a pseudonym of Richard Epstein.

Gounod's 1864 premiere performance in Paris of "Mireille" did not
succeed. Therefore the December performance was altered with another
ending of the overture, and a valse-arietta, "O légère hirondelle", was
added to the revised first act. A score of the second version should
include the valse.
