Raising the Profile of Mechanical Music
By Scotty Greene

We at the DeBence Museum are doing the best we can to accomplish this
goal. Each year we offer free tours to school kids with an emphasis
on 4th graders. For the past 20 years we have had no problem getting
grants to cover the admissions for this purpose. Budgets being what
they are for most school districts, we also pay for the bus to bring
them to us.

We arrange the topics covered to help with the PA requirements for
the 4th grade curriculum. We also give the kids a free pass for their
parents, and some bring the parents back to see our offerings. This
year we are scheduled to have about 400 kids in this program.

Aside from the music, don't forget that these are mechanical computers
and interesting mechanical devices, so we are working on (1) history
(a lot of the early American work was done by immigrants), (2) music
arranging (we get a lot of questions about who decides where the holes
get put), and (3) design ("How did they decide how to do this?").
