Mechanical Music in the Movies
By David Oppenheim

I would just like to add to this most enjoyable thread about mechanical
instruments featured in movies. A working Melville Clark Apollophone
player piano is actually foot pumped in at least one major scene in
the delightfully nostalgic 1962 film " The Music Man", starring Robert
Preston and Shirley Jones. The spring wound roll motor feature actually
interrupts Mayor Shinn's Fourth of July speech when, during rewind, the
piano roll comes off the take-up spool and starts flapping.

What appears to be the same Apollophone player piano shows up in Walt
Disney's 1963 musical, "Summer Magic", starring Haley Mills and Eddie
Hodges. Hodges actually pumps the new mechanical marvel in the scene
where the cast sings "Flitterin'" , probably specially cut for Disney
films by QRS, I would think. I have always wondered if this is the same
piano rented from a player piano rebuilding shop in Hollywood.
