"Pictures At An Exhibition" On Piano Rolls
By Kip Williams

[ "Pictures At An Exhibition", performed by Serge Prokofieff:
[ Duo-Art 65910: No. 4 "Cattle" & No. 5 "Ballet ..." (1/23)
[ Duo-Art 70299: "Promenade; An Old Castle" (mid '26)

"Cattle" is more often known in the U.S. as "Bydlo: The Ox-Cart."
I guess I can see where they get cattle! In the recording I have
of the track, played by Prokofieff, it's referred to as "Bydlo."

[ Sergei Korschmin, a Russian conductor and writer now living in
[ Brisbane, Australia, offers an extensive article about "Pictures"
 [ at http://korschmin.com/pictures-at-an-exhibition/ He writes
 [ about 'Bydlo':
 [
[ "According to A. Frankenstein opinion Bydlo is a Polish word meaning
[ 'cattle'. Hartmann's watercolor, which he had apparently executed
[ during a trip through Poland, showed a typical peasant wagon with
[ enormous wooden wheels, drawn by oxen."
